Our fieldwork with volunteer coordinators across a variety of nonprofit organizations highlights significant challenges and design opportunities for social media in the nonprofit sector. In particular, there are critical mismatches between the philosophies of volunteerism articulated by volunteer coordinators, who emphasize the importance of meaningful and sustained engagement with a cause, and the trajectory of social computing encouraging more short-term, episodic or  micro- volunteering.
