Our fieldwork with staff at a variety of nonprofit organizations highlights significant challenges and design opportunities for social media in the nonprofit sector. In particular, there are critical mismatches between the philosophies of nonprofit organizations, emphasizing the importance of meaningful and sustained engagement with a cause, and the trajectory of social computing encouraging more short-term, episodic or piecemeal engagement.
